Chapter 727 - Visiting the in-laws: Fortress City of Borg (Part 9)
When we entered the private room, there was no one inside just yet. I sat carefully on one side, right where we both can see if anyone walks in through the door from the outside.One of the attendants who saw us walk in the private room earlier confirmed who we were meeting and asked us if we want to order something in advance. I shook my head and the attendant excused himself out.
On the other hand, I tried to get Yren to sit on the seat next to me but he clung to my clothes with his dear life. It was clear that he did not want to be apart from me and my lap. I whispered to him that we will be meeting his father in a bit and if it was okay for him to be seen as we are. Well, I simply got the answer, "I don’t fucking care." so that is the end of the discussion, I guess.
At the designated time of the meeting, a man who looked like my husband’s twin but a scarred older version at that, walked through the door of the private room. He was about to greet me but he stopped in his tracks when he saw that there was a man resting on my lap whose upper body is sprawled on mine.
He coughed awkwardly and walked towards the other side of the table and took his seat. I simply smiled at him and nodded in greeting then I stole a kiss on Yren’s cheek who is currently snuggled and sleeping on the crook of my neck. He grumbled and woke up then he noticed that there was already someone sitting on the other side of the table.
Yren’s eyes widened and he turned his head slowly. He was met with a man whose only features that were different from his were the color of his eyes. The man looked older and more weathered by time with some scars here and there.
My husband was like pricked on the butt as he scrambled off of my lap then he sat next to me. He then looked down, not daring to look towards the man on the other side of the table. I couldn’t help but laugh as I remembered clearly that he said that he didn’t care if others saw our sitting position earlier.
That was when I heard a deep sounding laugh from the other side of the table. When I looked that way, I saw my father-in-law looking at me and Yren with fatherly and doting eyes. He made eye contact with me and started introducing himself.
With a voice that was also as deep as his laugh earlier, he said, "I am the condottierro and founder of Wrath. My name is Draven Zoiran. Unmarried and betrayed by a previous lover but I have given birth to a son that I lost even before I heard his first cry. I looked over for him all these years but I think I finally found him."
I responded to him with a jolly, "Hi, father-in-law! My name is Luna and I got married to this guy beside me not long ago. His name is Yren and what are the odds that his surname is the same as yours and he is looking for his lost father too."
This meeting does not need any confirmation or even a DNA test if you ask me. When my father-in-law heard what I said, his face look relieved and my husband started sniffing but he still refused to look up. These two are so similar even with how they express emotions that it’s funny.
I kept to myself after that and gave time to the two crybabies to talk to each other. The meeting lasted for an hour. It would have been longer if only my father-in-law can’t stay due to some responsibilities back in the mercenary group. Yren would be accompanying him as well to quit from the group since he has already reached his goal for joining.
Me and my husband also advised him about our other reason for staying in the Fortress City of Borg which is auditing in behalf of the palace. My father-in-law just smirked and told us in a final manner that he will be sending all the evidence he has collected for the past years to us to make our job easier. He would also give a heads up to his trusted personnel to assist us in the shadows.
When evening came, Yren came back to the inn with stacks of documents that were all proof of all the shady dealings of my father-in-law’s ex-girlfriend and her family (Yren’s biological mother). It also included a full documented story of what happened to him as one of their victims. The details of the document was honestly so horrible, even I got angry within the first page of the thick stack.
For this territory, I changed my approach all together. I came in using a disguised identity and I am keeping it that way. I do not have any intention on officially meeting the ruling family or telling them that I will be doing an audit. I want to see everything with my own eyes.
I spent the evening and the whole of the next day just reading through the documents and taking note of names of key people and places. I will then make discreet visits in the said place for my investigation. I did not forget to say my thanks to my father-in-law since he helped me not to go through the muddy waters of this place blindly.
The next days were spent with me spying, trespassing and stealing evidence from right under the noses of the corrupt people in the territory. I even went inside the dens of bandits, house of corrupt nobles and even the house of my husband’s mother. I copied the documents, ledgers and other written evidence of their illegal activities but left everything in the room as it is by using some useful magic.
It was really fun and exciting. This was actually the first time that I tried to use the full extent of my abilities for espionage alone and I can never be more than happy with the results.
With my father-in-law’s help, my work as an auditor in the Fortress City of Borg was done in just three days. The rest of my days here, I plan to use to consolidate everything I found out. As for my room, it has started to look like an evidence room since I erected a wooden board in the middle of the waiting room to arrange all the information. As for the number of people staying in here as of the moment, it has suddenly increased.
